The jewel on Florida’s Emerald Coast, Destin Florida is the ultimate beach holiday destination. Destin has branded itself as “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”, and is an island city with shores on both the Gulf of Mexico and Choctawhatchee Bay. The Emerald Coast is named so because instead of a crystal blue, the waters in the area shine an intense emerald green. Far from the party scene of Miami, Destin is a small city which provides the more relaxing side of Florida.
The fine sand in Destin means that the beaches in the area are some of the whitest in the world, with the sand resembling sugar in some parts. This contrast with the green sea makes Destin’s beaches some of the most beautiful and desirable in the world. Never too crowded, Destin’s beaches are extremely chilled out, the best place to catch up on your reading and experience peace and calm with your partner and family. Recommended beaches in Destin include Besley Park and Henderson Beach Park.
This huge waterpark makes a great Destin day out for the family. Giant waterslides and flumes mix with the “Honolulu Half-Pipe”, a surf simulator where the waves are always perfect, deep-dive pools, wave pools, and plenty of other thrills. There are also special rides for small children and gentler rides for families. Groups can hire a cabana to hang out and dry off in between the splashes.
Things To Do
October visitors will get to experience the Destin seafood Festival and the annual Destin Fishing Rodeo. Held in the first weekend of October, the Seafood Festival is a haven for fans of all things aquatic. Local street vendors provide world-class seafood, while local restaurants cook up treats for visitors. There are also activities for children, live music, and plenty of drinks to bring in the party atmosphere.
A fishing rodeo is a month-long event where the best sea anglers in the world compete to catch the biggest, juiciest fish off the coast of Destin. Over 30,000 anglers compete, and many prizes are won throughout the month, with over $100,000 given away!
If you visit outside of October, there is still a huge range of seafood restaurants to try the local fish. A.J’s Beachside Oyster Bar is a local favorite, which Caribbean Joe’s is a hot spot for those who want their seafood with a bit of spice!
Where to Stay
Holiday apartment rentals are big business in Destin, with the population of the small city tripling during high season, as most residents in the condos that frame the beach. However, Destin also has some world-class hotels.
The Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort is so big that visitors have a choice of beaches from both sides of the island. If you want a day away from the beach, the resort also has a range of pools and a brilliant golf course.
There is little choice for budget travelers, but some motels and guesthouses provide cheaper rooms. As the island is small, you will always be close to a beach, no matter how much you spend!
