Florida Keys travel is one of those journeys where the ride is as much fun as getting there. There must be just a few places in the world where getting there becomes an exciting experience, as approaching the Florida Keys. Getting to the Florida Keys is quite easy thanks to the Overseas Highway, also known as U.S. Route 1, the only road to enter in and leave the archipelago, driving from Miami or Florida City to Key Largo, the northernmost of the Upper Keys. In fact, the Overseas Highway is one of the best things about Florida Keys travel.
There are many travel agencies and tour operators which can provide you with transportation facilities from different cities within the Continental United States. Otherwise, you can drive your own car or RV. There are many options for getting there by road, including car rentals and even the Greyhound line that stops at Key Largo Shopper Grocery Store.
All the Florida Keys are interconnected by the Overseas Highway, a paved road that runs from Key Largo in the north to Key West in the southernmost tip. This route was the elongation of the Florida Overseas Railroad, a train route in operation from 1912 to 1935, that later evolved into the Florida East Coast Railway to Key West, a Class II railroad that made Florida Keys travel possible back when it had been all but impossible by land.
In addition to the U.S. Route 1, there are over 40 bridges linking each of the different keys along the highway, including the most popular and largest of all of them: the Seven Mile Bridge. This bridge was originally built in the early 1900s for the railroad service.
However, if you are wanting to arrive as soon as possible, take advantage of the two airports in the Florida Keys, the domestic airport at Marathon, the Heart of the Florida Keys, and the Key West International Airport, offering regular service from several major air carriers.
Flights to either airport are routes through Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, or Miami International Airports, but there are also direct flights from small airline companies located throughout the Bahamas and Florida.
International travelers need to connect from the Miami International Airport. Marathon is located about 100 miles south of Miami, while Key West is about 150 miles away. You will not only find car rental services at both airports but also helicopters and small planes rentals.
There is a shuttle service in Marathon, providing service from any of the Florida Keys to Fort Lauderdale or the Miami Airports. For further information on this form of Florida Keys travel.
Another convenient way to get there is by sea. You can sail from any point of Florida to Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key all of them with marina services providing the transportation you need.
Whether you are coming aboard a canoe, powerboat, or yacht, this option allows you to begin enjoying some of the water-related activities of the Florida Keys. There are also cruise ships sailing regularly to Key West from Mexico, the Caribbean, Central, South America, and several ports along the American East Coast and Canada.
Driving from Miami International Airport take LeJeune Road south to 836 West and continue west to the Florida Turnpike Extension (821), then south to US1 and the Keys.
From Orlando, take the Florida Turnpike south, following through Fort Lauderdale. Get off at Homestead / Key West ending at Florida City on U.S. Road 1, the main road towards Key Largo. Continue over the Overseas Highway to visit all the Keys from Key Largo to Key West.
There are two different routes coming from Tampa, one is I-75 south to Naples and then east across Alligator Alley to the Miami Exit and south to the Turnpike Extension. The other is via US41 south to Naples, east to the Turnpike Extension, and then south to U.S. Road.
By Train get as far as Miami via the Amtrack Railroad than by bus on Greyhound, which takes you directly to the Florida Keys.
From any city around the world or within the United States, fly to Miami, Florida, and get a local flight to the Florida Keys. Your travel agent can provide you with further information of flights scheduled to Florida that connects with Marathon or Key West.
The easiest way to arrive is taking the Intercostals Waterway leaving Miami and passing through the Card and Barnes Sounds to get into Florida Bay, however, this course is limited to 5-feet draft vessels.
You can also get there by the Oceanside route, taking the Hawk Channel, buoyed passage a few miles offshore which runs between the outer-most reefs and the Florida Keys,
