Fort Tiracol Heritage Resort in Goa

Situated at the northern tip of Goa, the Tiracol Fort is almost 42 km from Panaji. The name Tiracol is derived from the Marathi word ‘tir khol’ which means the vertical river corners. It was built in the 17th century by Maharaj Khem Sawant Bhonsle on a hillock beside the bank of Tiracol River, from where you can get a spectacular view of Arabian Sea. The fort was featured with a barrack, a chapel and 12 guns. Presently the fort is almost in ruins, and is being used as a hotel, Fort Tiracol Heritage Resort. There is a church but is not available to the public expect on the occasion of annual feast in the month of May.

History

In the year 1746, the viceroy of Goa, declared a war against the maharaja of Sawantwari and defeated them, the result of which the Raja surrendered the Fort to the Portuguese. Since then the fort was taken control by them until in 1961 when Portuguese rule was forced to bring to an end by India. This Fort possesses great historical value starting from the Marathi rule to Portuguese and then the freedom fight during the British rule. Each party used the fort as a protection against the enemy.

About Fort Tiracol

The hotel which was previously a historical fort offers a suitable destination for the tourists who want to spend time beside the spectacular Arabian Sea. The old fort has been rebuilt into a new heritage resort where visitors are always welcome to gain a new experience. The resort avails all sorts of facilities that the present tourists want. There are private balconies in the hotel from where you can enjoy the splendid view of the surrounding seascapes.

Interior description

This unique heritage hotel is featured with seven rooms and unlike any other hotels each room of the hotel possess a name of its own. The renovated suites and rooms are aristocratic with contemporary Portuguese structures. There are 5 deluxe rooms and 2 suites each is named after the seven days of the week. 2 suites are named as Friday and Sunday and rest is deluxe rooms. You can get full privacy and intimacy in the rooms. Despite contemporary Portuguese stylish structure, the rooms are equipped with all modern amenities properly matched with its monumental design. The hotel has got restaurant with lounge bar. The rooms are designed with king size beds, AC, Wi-Fi, TV, modern washrooms with rain shower. You can also arrange for picnics and trips along with cruising and fishing if you want to. Transport and medical facilities are available too.

Reaching there

The nearest air hub is the Dabolim International Airport located at a distance of 80 km from the spot and the closest railhead is Thivim railway station at a distance of 45 km. Taxis and cabs are available form both the airport and rail station that transfers tourist to their destination. Either you can go directly to the fort or reach the Querim Beach from any of the ports. There are ferry services available from the beach to the fort. There is also a bus station at a distance of 35 km, Mapusa Bus stand. Ferry services from Querim beach to the fort across the Tircol River are available on daily basis from 6:30 in the morning till 9:30 in the evening.  The Fort Tiracol hotel offers pick- up service from any point of Goa if you want.

When to visit

The time between Novembers to March is the suitable time to visit the fort. As there are limited rooms to stay in the hotel, you need to do prior booking. But this time it is the peak season of Goa and the hotel tariffs are higher. If you opt for cheaper rates then the months from April to September is perfect for you. On every season you can enjoy the beauty of the surrounding greeneries and the sea.
