Idamalayar Dam— Things to know before you go

There are many dams across Kerala that are being used for irrigation purposes and additionally for tourists destination. Idamalayar Dam has been built on the Idamalayar River which is a tributary of River Periyar in the state. The length of the dam is 373 meters and is used as a multipurpose concrete reservoir within the picturesque hills located in the Western Ghats in Southern India. The storage of the dam is used by the hydroelectric power supply. It is a forested region near Boothathankeetu at Ennakal which is situated at a distance of seventy kilometers from Kochi. People from off places come here to enjoy the beauty of nature. Trekking, Boating, and Bird watching are various activities that can be done by visitors. The forests near the reservoir have many wild elephants, so you need to care before heading for the forest. There are lots of varieties of birds that could be seen propping near the trees.

How to reach

The road you should take to reach the dam is the road that connects the Bhoothathankettu dam to the Idamalayar dam. The driving time takes ten to minutes to reach there. It is situated at a distance of 36 km from Kodamangala. Public buses are available to reach the place.

Activities to do near the Idamalayar Dam

Other than boating and trekking you can do fishing along with some other activities that are mentioned below.

  • Motor mud racing is an uncommon activity done by the locals and you may try too
  • There is Hub for elephants that you can explore
  • Thattekkadu Bird Sanctuary is an ideal place for watching lots of foreign as well as native birds
  • Urulanthanni is also a bird-watching center with varieties of birds species.
  • Driving through the forest is a thrilling experience with senses wide open to have a view of elephants now and then.

  • Marine Drive– it is a wonderful promenade and one of the famous tourist places in Kochi toward the backwaters. The place is featured with weatherproof cast ironed seats on grey tiles for utmost relaxation.
  • Iringole Temple– this temple is situated in Perumbavoor within the heart of a dense forest. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi.
  • Bhoothathankettu– it is also a dam very near the Idakulam reservoir and both is well connected by the transport system
  • Bishops House– this is called the eparchy of Kothamangalam and is an East Syrian Catholic House that is situated in central Kerala.
  • Paniyeli Poru– it is a weekend gateway that is a perfect place to escape from the extreme heat. The region is plastic free due to which you will feel fresh and can relate to nature. The place remains closed during the monsoon.

Best time to visit Idamalayar Dam

It can be visited any time of the year but try to avoid extreme summer and monsoon season as the humidity is the forest area remains high in that time. The best time is late monsoon and at winter season which starts from the month of October and ends till March.

There are hotels near and far from the Idamalayar Dam which is close to nature. You need to take permission from KSEB to enter the dam area. The way from Kothamangalam to Idamalayar is something that cannot be described as you pass through the thick jungles. It is so nice that you will be captivated by the beauty of the surroundings and environment. There is a place uphill known as Vaisali caves which is a major attraction. There is no restaurant nearby except a village restaurant that is run by a couple.
