Ivano-Frankivsk

Ivano-Frankivsk is an administrative center of the Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, the considerable economic and cultural center of the West of Ukraine. To 1962 was called Stanislav. The population of a city is 240 678 inhabitants (for May, 1st, 2010).

How to come to Ivano-Frankivsk

By train

The railway station near the city center (square Privokzalna, 1). Large transfer station of several directions: to the Carpathians, to Lviv, to Kyiv. Before a front entrance – bus station of the suburban and long-distance ways.

By airplane

The airport is in the southern suburb of a city near to city building (street Aeroflotska, 5), 5 km from the Railway station. Nearby there passes a large city highway.

Manjavsky Monastery

It is located in village Manjava of the Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, 25 km from village Nadvorna, in 55 km from Ivano-Frankivsk. The monastery is based in 1612 as a man’s monastery, operates nowadays.

Manjavsky Fall

It is located in a mountain gorge above the Manjavsky monastery, the height of 20 m, waterfalls in several cascades, below a lake where it is possible to have a bath.

History of Ivano-Frankovsk

Part of the RechPospolita

The city has been based in 1662 by Krakow castellan, subsequently crowned hetman AndrzejPototsky (from a known family of the Polish magnates), and named Stanislaus in honor of the father, the great crowned hetman StanislavPototsky “Revery”. The city has been based as a fortress for protection against attacks of the Crimean Tatars and a strong point of the Polish magnates  Pototsky in Galicia.  City acquired the Magdeburg right. In 1676-1677 city has sustained a siege of Turkish armies. In 1706 it is plundered by Russian armies in revenge for support StanislavLeschinsky by Pototsky.

Part of the Austrian Empire

On the first division of Poland in 1772 the city has departed to Habsburg Empire (since 1804 — the Austrian Empire, since 1867 — Austro-Hungary Empire). Public life was stirred up by the revolution of 1848. In Stanislavov «Russian council» has been created (along with Polish), is an organized group of National guards, the first newspaper has started to publish. Deputies-Ukrainians have been elected to the parliament. In 1884 the known public figure and writer Natalia Kobrinska has spent in a city the constituent assembly of “the Society of Russian women» (more later name — «the Union of Ukrainian Women»). It was the beginning of the organized women’s movement in Ukraine.

Between World Wars. Part of Poland.

During the First World War, in 1915-1916 there were cruel fights for a city. Some historical buildings were destroyed and restored already in the newest architectural forms. After the disintegration of Austro-Hungary in 1918, the West Ukrainian National Republic has been created. Stanislav throughout January 1919 was its capital. In May Stanislavov was occupied by Polish armies and from then till the beginning of the Second World War, it was the capital Stanislavovskevoevodstvo of Poland.

The Second World War

In September 1939 according to the Secret, the additional report to the pact of Molotov-Ribbentrop Stanislavov was occupied by the Soviet armies, then it was renamed to Stanislav and included into the structure of the USSR. From June 1941 till June 1944 Stanislav was occupied by
German nazis. In 1944 the city has been released by the Soviet army.

Part of the USSR and independent Ukraine

In 1962 the city hasn’t the 300 anniversary. It has been renamed and since then bears the name of the outstanding Ukrainian writer and public figure Ivan Franko which repeatedly visited the city, wrote and read his literature things.
