The Orang National Park is also called Rajiv Gandhi Oral national park, located along the Bank of Brahmaputra River in the districts of Sonitpur & Darrang in Assam. It is very close to Guwahati and a quick drive would take you to your destination. The last 12 km is very as the roads are bumpy and you would feel uncomfortable. Along the roadside, you would cross ancient villages and greeneries that give relief from your exhausting journey. You could notice a group of villagers sitting beside the park gate and spending time with their children. History of Orang National Park

The national park was previously a residential area where Orang tribes used to stay. But after a disease attacked them they left the place and went somewhere else. There are quite a number of man-made lakes inside the forest and also a Shiva temple that proves that sometime in the past they used to reside here. In 1985 the forest was declared a wildlife sanctuary and thereafter in the year 1999, it became a national park.

How to reach Orang National Park

The park is accessible from all corners of the country as the airlines and the railway routes are connected with all the great cities. Roadways also serve as good communication with other towns of the state. The nearest town to the park is Tezpur(32km) and the state’s capital Guwahati is at a distance of 140 km from the national park. National highway 52 is nearer to the spot 15 km away. Orang town is the village where the park is situated. The nearest railway hub is Solanibari and also Rangapara. Solanibari is also the name of the nearest airport.

Best season to go and visiting time

The winter and the post-winter months are the best time to visit there that starts from October till April. Mangoldoi, the forest divisional officer should be visited prior to entering the forest. The time to enter the forest is from 7:30 to 9:30 in the morning and from 2:00 to 3:00 in noon. Except for these times, the forest remains closed.

Whenever you are heading to any forest or national park keep in mind to carry some essentials, as no one knows what is next. Keep a torch and some required medicine. Other things like matches, a knife, warm clothes, and binoculars.

Where to stay

There is tourist lodges of the forest department that is capable of arranging for a group of 16 people. You are requested to make advance reservations. The forest dormitory is also there close to the entry gate. They can provide accommodation for a maximum of 40 people excluding food and bedding. You have to bring your own sleeping bags and things for making food or can order food from outside. If these places are not suitable for you then you may stay at the guest houses in Tezpur.

Forest wildlife

The park is characterized by rich flora and fauna that includes the elephant, barking deer, green pigeon, one-horned rhino, leopard, and most importantly the tiger. White pelicans, water birds, and other migratory birds are other attractions of the forest.

The lakes are the perfect place for fish breeding. Different species of birds including predators, scavengers, and game birds are also found there. The nearby river houses the Gangetic dolphin. Reptiles such as black Krait, Cobra, Monitor Lizard, and Indian Rock Python are inhabitants of this forest.

You can try an elephant safari rather than a jeep safari if you want to get into the wilderness. The entry fee is rupees fifty and rupees three hundred per person for the elephant safari. Cruising options are available if you want to explore the forest in a different way.

The Orang National Park is a perfect gateway for an adventurous tour. National parks are being constructed to preserve the endangered animals that are facing threats due to some unusual activities of commercially minded people. Poaching, hunting, or grazing inside the forest is strictly prohibited to give the animals a better life free from encroachment.
