Shinde Chhatri- a memorial in Pune
Shinde Chhatri is a memorial in Pune built in the memory of the Mahadji Shinde, a military leader of the 18th century. He has dedicated his life to the Maratha army and was their commander in chief from the year 1760 till 1780. The building is actually a temple of Lord Shiva and in front of it is the spot of cremation of Shinde. The temple was constructed in the year 1794 and it is surprising that Shinde died on the same year leading to the formation of the cremation point outside the temple premise. In Maratha language the meaning of Chhatri refers to umbrella. There is a rule to be followed by every visitor when they enter premise they need to keep their umbrella closed even if it rains.
Architecture of Shinde Chhatri
The architecture of the building reflects the unique design that is most of all used in Rajasthan. Two types of cultures are blended together to form the structure. It has been constructed using the Vastu hara rules and is beautifully carved with various specimens, the design of which is really appreciable. The idols of the saints have been finely carved upon yellow colored stone, and the base of which are built out of black stone including the sanctum. Apart from paintings and carvings, the hall also contains a gallery inside it. The windows are displayed in colorful English style. The building is also adorned with painted pictures of Shinde family. Unfortunately for many years the memorial was left uncared and the structure continued to get destroyed but then now it is being renovated to its original form. The temple is maintained by the Sindhia Devasthan trust of Gwalior.
Interior decoration of the temple
The building is a three storage structure with royal design and gorgeous models. As soon as you enter the premise you would be astonished to spot the memorial is such a beauty. It is so much captivating that you would be able to decide whether to wonder around the temple looking on the outward structure or visit the interior part which is equally attractive. The ceilings are just magical, upper floors too catches visitors’ attention on a great level. The ornamented pillars, walls, doors and windows are all decorated with intricate designs and it would take much time if you want to see it properly. Although photography is not allowed inside the premise but you can catch some sort from the outside gate. All over it is a gateway into an ancient royal structure.
The temple stands at a distance of 15 km from the city centre of Pune. From there you have to turn south east and then drive for 20 minutes to reach the temple. Auto rickshaws and taxis are available to take to your destination. The memorial can also be reached from the famous Race Course of Pune, which is at a distance of 2 km from Wanowri.

A few of nearby attractions are Osho ashram and the Iskcon temple. The tribal cultural museum is also nearby that displays Maharashtra tribes’ culture. Shopping is accessible from the nearby market Phoenix market city.
