5 Reasons to Spend Easter in Tenerife

Spend Easter in Tenerife: The long Easter weekend always provides an excellent opportunity to go on a short break to a new destination. One place you should consider – especially if you’re planning a romantic getaway – is Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Read on to find out why!

1) Stunning beaches

As you might expect from a Mediterranean island, the beaches on Tenerife are hugely attractive to sun-seeking visitors. Comprising a mixture of black and golden sand beaches, along with a few pebble ones, the sunbathing spots here range from lively to peaceful – with the latter likely to be the best option for spending quality time with your partner.

The most promising romantic beaches include Playa Bollullo and Playa de Los Patos in the north, and Playa del Duque and Playa El Puertito in the south. Just be aware that many of Tenerife’s more remote beaches are especially popular with nudists!

2) Affordable accommodation

As the largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife offers a wide range of accommodation for all budgets. If you’re trying to save a bit of money, you may be surprised at just how far your cash will go, with a few four and even five-star hotels within the reach of travellers who would normally opt for mid-range rooms.

If you’re not sure where to begin your search for the perfect hotel in Tenerife, head to the Hotelopia website to find rooms within your price range and read reviews from other guests.

3) Beautiful natural scenery

Teide National Park

Your romantic break won’t be complete without a stroll through some of Tenerife’s natural hotspots – of which there are many. Teide National Park is both the oldest and biggest in the Canaries and is home to Mount Teide, Spain’s largest volcano. You’ll spot plenty of animals and plants in the shadow of this magnificent pile of rock that you won’t see anywhere else, including the Teide violet.

One natural highlight that you’re unlikely to have heard of is the Reserva Ambiental de San Blas, which harbors more endemic animals and plants. It also offers a fascinating insight into Tenerife’s history through its geological formations, which will be explained to you on a guided eco-tour.

4) Fascinating Easter traditions

Tenerife’s traditional side is well worth exploring, and Easter is the perfect time to do so. Holy Week is usually a ceremony-filled affair in Spain. The celebrations in Tenerife include the Passion of Adeje, which is attended by tens of thousands of people, and the Magna and Silent Processions in La Laguna.

These usually involve hooded brotherhoods who don distinctive long, pointed headwear and solemnly walk the streets in front of crowds of people. The sight is especially poignant in the evening Silent Procession, thanks to the dark skies and almost eerie atmosphere.

5) Unforgettable activities

If for some reason, you decide to leave the warm sand of Tenerife’s beaches to get stuck into an activity or two, you’ll have lots of options to choose from. One of the best things to do is whale and dolphin watching in south Tenerife, which is home to 21 different species.

Other popular pursuits include golf, diving, surfing, and cycling, as well as nature hikes and beach walks. You could also hire a car to see some of the attractions further out from where you’re staying. The choices are endless!
