An introduction to Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve

Tadoba National Park or Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is one of the largest tiger reserve in India. It is situated in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra with an extension of 1727 square kilometre. This park has been divided into three zones, the one of which is Tadoba north range and the other being Kolsa south range. The third Morhuli range lies in between the both. The forest has two lakes and one river that get filled with water during every rainy season. These lakes and river are mainly to provide the wild lives with enough water for survival.

Forest Features

The natural vegetation that has created the forest includes tress like Teak, Salai, Arjun, Bamboo, Ain and many more. Other than tigers, various wild animals could be found here such as Chital, spotted and barking deer, sloth bears, Indian leopards, striped hyena, marsh crocodiles, Indian python, cobras etc. This forest is also home to certain species of native birds from central India. Wild dogs and sloth bears are very common and could be spotted anytime. The forest is gifted with 43 tigers, although different factors are responsible for making a suitable environment for them. Dense forest area, deep valleys, smooth meadows and wonderful atmosphere are responsible for maintaining their growth.

Wildlife safari

Tiger safari is an awesome and thrilling experience one can have in his or her lifetime. The forest is natural habitat of the wild animals and you will be lucky to enter their home and spot them alive in front of you. The open jeep ride is the only way by which you can watch the wild animals at a safe distance. It is not advisable to get down the jeep. There will be guide who will conduct you all the way. The safari provides an opportunity to the visitors to explore the jungle and spot the wild animals like leapord, tiger, wild dogs and bears. The three zones mentioned below give access to jeep safari.

Mohurli zone: This zone is the best to give maximum chances to spot tigers and other wild lives. This zone also provides accommodation to the tourist. The location being in centre it has easy access to both the zones around it.

Tadoba: Diverse wildlife and scenic views are the importance of this zone. It is accessible from the Mohurli zone too.

Kolsa: From here you cannot see much of wild animals; however remarkable forest landscapes can be enjoyed at a greater level.

Safari timings are early morning and noon, the only time you could book the safari.  Jeeps need to be booked in advance. For booking you need to go to the DFO office of Chandrapur district at the Navegoan gate. Jeeps are provided with trained drivers at the local taxi stand.

How to reach Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve

You can reach there by train, by flight or by roadways. Regular flights are available from Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Nagpur and Bangalore. The nearest rail station is Chandrapur, from there you can hire cab to reach the spot which is 45 km away. It is also connected by road with the major cities of India.

Where to stay

There are quite a number of affordable and exciting resorts in the periphery of the national park. Tiger trials jungle lodge and tiger heavens are wonderful luxurious resorts of the area with basic amenities. Another one which is situated among the lakes and streams is the Camp Serai tiger Tadoba. Weather proof luxurious tents are available in this accommodation which is just ideal for nature and wildlife lovers.

Best time to visit Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve

From mid October to the end of May is the best time to explore the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve . On Tuesdays it remains closed the whole day. It is better not to visit there during the monsoon which is from June to September as the insect life comes to life at this period.

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is a paradise for the wildlife enthusiasts. It is well known for its rich natural diversity. The forest is an infinite wealth of huge varieties of flora and fauna and wildlife as well. It is the oldest tiger reserve and the biggest national park among Central India.
