Varkala Beach in South Kerala

One of the most beautiful beaches in the state of Kerala is the Varkala Beach located in the district of Thiruvananthapuram. This beach is also known as Papanasam beach and is famous destination for the international tourists. The meaning of ‘papanasam’ means washing away the sins. It is believed that if one takes a dip in the water of this beach, then he or she is freed from all sins. Swimming and sun bathing is the popular activities here. The view of the sunset at the beach is very stunning which attracts many tourists. Resorts, restaurants and lots of shops are spread along the cliff over an area of 1 km. the sand along the beach is black in color in most parts all over Kerala which is radioactive element rich in Thorium oxide.

When to visit

The temperature remains high all around the year in Varkala. The ideal time to visit there is from December to February. At this time, the weather remains dry and warm. In the month of June to August there may be heavy rains. If you wish to attend the traditional Kathakali performance and elephant processions then you may visit there in the month of March and April. Varkala is known for its beautiful tourist’s destination and has got many spots nearby for visiting. There is Hindu temple located near to the beach known as Janardana Swami temple and is known as ‘Banaras of the south’. It is the oldest temple in the state being two thousand years old. The famous 10 days festival Arattu is celebrated here twice every year which a great attraction. The Ashramam called Shivagiri Mutt is another major attraction that lies on the Shivagiri hill. The Anchengo Fort and Light House is another tourist’s destination to visit that have backdrop of British ruling.

The nearby railway station is Varkala located at a distance of 3 km from the beach. And the closest airport is Trivandrum International Airport. Cabs, auto rickshaws are available from all station to reach the beach. Varkala Bus Station is well connected with major cities of India which is near to NH47. Buses ply from Trivandrun and Kochi to Varkala beach.
