Varkala Beach in South Kerala
One of the most beautiful beaches in the state of Kerala is Varkala Beach located in the district of Thiruvananthapuram. This beach is also known as Papanasam beach and is a famous destination for international tourists. The meaning of ‘papanasam’ means washing away the sins. It is believed that if one takes a dip in the water of this beach, then he or she is freed from all sins. Swimming and sunbathing are popular activities here. Resorts, restaurants and lots of shops are spread along the cliff over an area of 1 km. the sand along the beach is black in color in most parts all over Kerala which is a radioactive element rich in Thorium oxide.

When to visit
The temperature remains high all around the year in Varkala. The ideal time to visit there is from December to February. At this time, the weather remains dry and warm. In the month of June to August there may be heavy rains. If you wish to attend the traditional Kathakali performance and elephant processions then you may visit there in the month of March and April. It happens during the Arattu festival at Janardana Swami Temple.
